Design History Essay

Graphic design is an expression of a professional & creative individual who aims to satisfy a client’s need of visual representation. Graphic Design incorporates photographs, illustrations and design. Designers use all of these tools to create a visually intriguing and informative work. A graphic designer’s objective is to communicate visually.

I feel graphic design has been around since humans began to communicate with one another. Ancient pictographs & hieroglyphics dated back to 10,000 bc are a form of visual communication; therefore, a graphic that was thought about or “designed.”

The advertising side of graphic design became very dominant in the early 20th century. With the impact of the war, communication needed to be louder in an effort to gain support. After the war, the world progressed into a dark depression. Printing and typography became more resourceful. Graphic designers began to see all the different objects they could create a message on. Advertisements were everywhere. Posters began to cover the walls of the city. The posters began to make bolder statements with influences from expressionism and the Bauhaus school.

It is important for me to know about the history of Graphic Design because I can learn from previous works that have and have not worked as far as having a public impact. I feel the more I know about different styles and techniques, the better my creations may become.
